Story of Thiruthani Murugan Temple
According to Hindu Mythology, The king of heaven, Indra, gave his daughter Deivanai in marriage to Lord Murugan and gave his elephant, Airavatam, as part of the dowry. After the elephant left, Indra noticed that his wealth was decreasing. Lord Murugan offered to return the elephant, but Indra, who valued honour above all, refused. Instead, he asked that the elephant face his direction. Since then, every elephant in the temple has faced east. It is also said that after defeating Ravana, Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva at Rameswaram and then came to Thiruthani to find peace.
Legend of Valli and Murugan
Valli was the daughter of Nambirajan, the king of the Vedda tribe in the forest of Kataragam. Nambirajan and his wife had prayed to Lord Shiva for a child. One day, they found a baby girl in the forest and named her Valli, raising her as their own. Valli grew up to be a beautiful and spiritual girl. She became a devoted follower of Lord Murugan, even though she had never seen him, and vowed to marry him, believing he was her divine partner.
Murugan, impressed by Valli's devotion, decided to test her love and determination. He disguised himself as an old man and approached her. At the same time, his brother Ganesha turned into a wild elephant to scare Valli. Frightened, Valli ran to the old man for protection. The old man (Murugan in disguise) saved her, and she gratefully offered him anything in return for his help.
The old man asked for her hand in marriage, but Valli, staying true to her vow, refused. It was then Murugan revealed his identity to her. Overwhelmed with joy and devotion, Valli accepted Murugan's proposal, fulfilling her vow.
